Addressing your readers

Hello friends,

Welcome to chapter 2 of my learning how to write. This chapter is pretty short. Let’s dig in.

I think I do pretty well on the first point of this chapter and that is to write as you speak. Robots or AI sounding is generally not welcomed.

Lesson 2 is tone. Tone being “the attitude a writer conveys toward the subject matter and the audience.” The tip for this was to imagine my readers reacting to what I’ve written.

Lesson three: use jargon carefully. I can honestly say I have no idea if I even use jargon when talking about my knitting and/or other projects. Mainly because when I’m reading a blog for a new pattern or project, I have no idea what they are saying and have to look it up 90% of the time. If I do, I’m sorry. The question our book wants us to think about is…Will readers understand the jargon?

And finally, the main levels of language.

1. Formal -  Use when you want to downplay your involvement and give an expert sound.

2. Informal - The way most people write.

3. Familiar - Used for personal letters, journals, diaries (the way I think I write)

And that closes out chapter 2. Not as ouuu and ahhhh but still good to think about as we write. Like lesson 1 taught us Think before you write!

With lots of love
